Abstract:

The present study aimed to investigate the level of awareness of safety and security procedures in school laboratories and their knowledge sources among science teachers and laboratory technicians, as well as to identify the significance of differences according to certain variables. To meet such an end, the study adopted the descriptive methodology. The researcher designed a scale to measure awareness of laboratory safety and security procedures, which was administered to a study sample of (348) male and female teachers and laboratory technicians. The findings revealed that the overall level of awareness regarding laboratory safety and security procedures among the study sample was lower than the acceptable standard. Furthermore, the results indicated no statistically significant differences between male and female teachers attributed to the variables of gender, experience, specialization, and academic qualification. Similarly, no statistically significant differences were found among male and female laboratory technicians attributed to the variables of gender, experience, and academic qualification. Conversely, the findings demonstrated statistically significant differences regarding the job variable in favor of the (laboratory technician) position. The results also showed that university education, external reading, the Internet, and the teacher’s manual ranked as the primary knowledge sources of laboratory safety and security procedures from the perspective of the sample members. The study recommended the necessity of designing courses and training programs on laboratory safety and security for pre-service and in-service teachers, in addition to developing websites for the same purpose.
